Pillowy soft dough is made with a touch of honey which adds a delicious sweetness to the rolls. The honey butter rolls are topped with a delicious honey butter fresh out of the oven.
Bread is my weakness. Well, I have a couple of food weaknesses, but bread is certainly one of them! If there are dinner rolls on the table, you can guarantee I will be grabbing one, or two, or three! My mom used to make homemade bread all the time. She had a bread machine, so you could really smell the bread throughout the house as it rose in the bread machine. It smelled so good! You truly can’t beat homemade bread.
These Honey Butter Rolls combine pillowy soft rolls, with a hint of a sweet taste from honey. After baking, when the rolls are still warm from the oven, the rolls are brushed with a honey butter. The honey butter soaks into the rolls and makes them ultra delicious. Need I say more?!
The best part about these rolls is they don’t take long to make. The honey butter rolls have a first rise of 30 minutes, then a second rise of 20 minutes. However, part of the second rise time accounts for the oven preheating, which can take 8-10 minutes. Overall, the rolls can be made in under 90 minutes, which is quick in the bread world. If you are crunched for time, you can even make these the night before, or make them over the weekend and freeze them. These honey butter rolls freeze great! You can thaw them out in the refrigerator the night before you plan to eat them.
The details
Here’s how to make these Honey Butter Rolls
knead the dough
Making this dough for the honey butter rolls could not be any simpler. Since this recipe uses instant yeast, you can simply add all ingredients into your mixing bowl and mix on medium-low speed for 5 minutes. Now, if you do not have instant yeast on hand and prefer to use active dry yeast, you can do so in a 1:1 replacement. HOWEVER, you will have to add the active dry yeast to the warm milk/water as well as the honey and allow the mixture to sit for 5-10 minutes, until the mixture gets frothy. This step activates the yeast, which is not needed for the instant yeast, hence why it is called “instant”, because it can work instantly.
1st rise
A trick I like to use when making bread is to turn my oven on. Once the oven reaches 100F, I turn the oven off, then place my covered dough in the warm oven. Allow your bread to rise for 30 minutes in a warm place.
divide the dough
Once the dough is done rising, punch the dough down and turn out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12-16 pieces (depending on how large you want your dinner rolls). Roll the dough into balls, then place in a greased 9×13 inch pan.
second rise
Cover your 9×13 inch pan and allow the rolls to rise for 20 minutes. At the 10-minute mark, turn your oven on to begin preheating the oven.
bake the rolls
Once the oven comes up to temperature, brush the rolls with a beaten egg (this helps create a beautiful golden brown color on the surface of the honey butter rolls), and bake for 14-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
As soon as the honey butter rolls finish baking, brush the rolls with the warm honey butter. This butter mixture will sink into the honey butter rolls, making them ultra delicious!

Description
If you’re a beginner at making bread, this honey butter roll recipe is for you. These honey butter rolls can be made from start to finish in roughly an hour, and require very little hands on time. Pillowy soft dough is made with a touch of honey which adds a delicious sweetness to the rolls. The dinner rolls are topped with a delicious honey butter fresh out of the oven.
Ingredients
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 1/2 cup whole milk (warmed to 110F)
- 1/2 cup water (warmed to 110F)
- 1 large egg
- 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Egg Wash
- 1 large egg, beaten
For topping
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1/2 tablespoon honey
Instructions
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with the dough hook attachment, add all ingredients to the bowl. Mix until a dough ball forms on low speed, then increase speed to medium and knead for 5 minutes.
2. Place dough in lightly greased bowl. Spray top of dough with nonstick spray then cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise for 30 minutes. (I like to turn the oven on, then once the oven reaches 100F, I turn the oven off. I place the covered dough in the warm oven and allow it to rise in the warm environment for 30 minutes).
3. Punch down dough, then turn out onto floured surface. Divide dough into roughly 12-16 equal pieces. Take the edges of the dough and pinch together in the center of the roll. Flip roll over and using your hand, gently place it over the dough and roll in a circular motion to create a smooth round ball. Place in lightly greased 9×13 pan. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm place for an additional 20 minutes.
4. Preheat oven to 350F.
5. Brush egg wash over rolls, then bake in preheated oven for 14-18 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush the rolls with honey butter. Enjoy!
Notes
- This recipe uses instant yeast which means it does not need time to activate like active dry yeast. You can simply add the yeast in with the other ingredients and mix the dough right away. If you only have active dry yeast on hand, you can substitute an equal amount. Just add the yeast to the warm milk, whisk to combine and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes or until the surface gets frothy. This allows the yeast to activate and be ready to use and make your bread rise.
- You can use either all-purpose or bread flour for these. Bread flour results in a chewier texture, but the rolls are pillowy soft with either flour you use.
- You can freeze these rolls after they are baked or right before baking. If you freeze the dough, freeze the dough right after shaping them into balls, then place in a zip-top bag. The day you plan to bake the rolls, allow them to thaw/rise for 4-5 hours at room temperature then bake the rolls. You can freeze the dough balls or the freshly baked rolls for up to 3 months in a freezer safe bag.
