Homemade Nutella Swirl Marshmallows

Making your own marshmallows, may the most fun thing to do! I mean, who doesn’t like a soft, squishy marshmallow? These Nutella swirl marshmallows are a fun twist on standard homemade marshmallows. The gooey chocolate swirl in the marshmallows just makes these divine. They’re great to add to homemade hot cocoa too!

I made these Nutella swirl marshmallows this year as a gift to give out to the neighbors. They’re such a fun treat and honestly look pretty impressive. So, if you want to impress your friends and family or neighbors, try making them these! They would pair perfectly with a Hot Cocoa mix too. That would make such fun DIY Christmas gifts!

The details

Homemade marshmallows are surprisingly easy to make. I know I always say it, but homemade truly is better. You can’t beat freshly made marshmallows. They are so soft and squishy and just taste delicious! I decided to make these Nutella swirl marshmallows, because I love the contrasting colors of the Nutella with the white marshmallow. I also love the taste of the chocolate hazelnut flavors from the Nutella paired with the vanilla marshmallow.

Ingredients

  • water – water is needed to “bloom” the gelatin (essentially help make it work). Water is essential to create the soft characteristic marshmallow texture.
  • unflavored gelatin – gelatin gives marshmallows their signature stretchy, chewy texture.
  • light corn syrup – this helps prevent the sugar from crystallizing and keeps the marshmallows soft.
  • granulated sugar – sugar creates the delicious sweetness in the marshmallows
  • vanilla extract – this enhances the flavors of the marshmallows
  • Nutella – this is optional, but if you like Nutella, I recommend adding this! The Nutella adds delicious flavor to the homemade marshmallows.

Here’s how to make the homemade marshmallows

I truly mean it when I say these Nutella Swirl Marshmallows are easy to make. Plus they make a great DIY Christmas gift to give out to your friends and family, or neighbors down the street. So, let’s get started.

Before you begin making the marshmallows, get your pan ready! Line an 8×8 pan with parchment paper, then spray nonstick cooking spray on the parchment paper.

You’ll begin making these marshmallows by adding half the water over top of the gelatin. I recommend putting this in your bowl you plan to make the marshmallows in. I used a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment, but you can certainly use a large mixing bowl and a handheld mixer. This allows the gelatin to bloom. Basically this helps the gelatin get smooth, develop strength and is ready to use in your recipe.

While the gelatin blooms, add the remaining water, the corn syrup and sugar into a saucepan. Bring to a boil and boil for 1 minute. Pour this hot syrup over the gelatin mixture. This hot syrup will dissolve the gelatin granules, so that it is not lumpy in the marshmallows.

Beat the mixture on high speed for 6 minutes, or until fluffy and stiff peaks form. While the mixture is beating, heat your Nutella in a microwave safe bowl so that it is pourable consistency. Add in the vanilla extract and mix just until combined.

Immediately transfer into prepared pan. Pour the Nutella over the marshmallows (you can skip this step if you just want plain marshmallows). Use a butter knife to run through the marshmallows to create a swirl effect. Dust with powdered sugar.

Set aside for 3 hours to allow the marshmallows to firm up. Once they are firm to the touch, you can cut them into your desired sizes. If the marshmallows are a bit sticky on the surface, dust lightly with powdered sugar. This will help keep them from being sticky.

These Nutella Marshmallows would. make a great Christmas gift. Here are a few other ideas.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2/3 cup water, divided
  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin (2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup Nutella, to swirl through

Instructions

1. Line an 8×8 pan with parchment paper. Spray the parchment paper with nonstick cooking spray.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with the whisk attachment, or large mixing bowl, add 1/3 cup (or 78 mL) water plus the gelatin.

3. In a small saucepan, add the remaining water, corn syrup and sugar. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat. Boil the mixture for 1 minute.

4. Pour hot syrup over gelatin mixture. Use a handheld mixer, or the whisk attachment of the stand mixer and beat on high speed for 6 minutes, or until fluffy and stiff peaks form. Add in the vanilla extract and mix just until combined.

5. When the marshmallow mixture is almost done, heat Nutella for 45 seconds in microwave, or until warm and pourable.

6. Pour marshmallow mixture into prepared pan.

7. Drizzle Nutella over marshmallow, then use a butter knife to gently swirl through the marshmallow. Dust with powdered sugar.

2. Set aside for the marshmallows to set up for 3 hours, or until firm to the touch. They will set faster in colder weather (mine only took an hour sitting outside in our sunroom when it was around 45 degrees Fahrenheit outside.)
