Is there anything better than sinking your teeth into warm, fudgy homemade brownies? These homemade brownies are my favorite brownies, hands down. There are thousands of brownie recipes that you will find on the internet, but I promise you. After you make these, this is the only recipe you will make again, and again and again.

Here is why you will love these Homemade Brownies

  • these take only 30 minutes to bake and a few minutes to mix together
  • No fancy mixing device needed – just a bowl and a whisk or wooden spoon
  • these consistently produce brownies with a delicious fudgy interior and the perfect shiny, crackly top

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you will need to make these delicious fudgy homemade brownies.

  • unsalted butter
  • semi-sweet chocolate bar
  • cocoa powder
  • granulated sugar
  • large eggs
  • all-purpose flour
  • salt
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips

Ingredient Notes

These brownies use a combination of semi-sweet chocolate, cocoa powder and chocolate chips. The semi-sweet chocolate gets melted with the butter. The addition of the chocolate makes the brownies more rich and with a deeper chocolate flavor.

The semi-sweet chocolate chips get added into the brownie batter, which gets warm and melty after baking. This leaves you with pockets of rich, gooey, melted chocolate. YUM!

Here’s how to make these Homemade Brownies, STEP BY STEP

Melt the butter and chocolate

You can melt the butter and chocolate in a microwave safe container or on a double boiler over the stove top. If you melt in the microwave, melt in 30 second increments, stirring in between each.To set up a double boiler, fill a small saucepan half full with water. Bring to a boil, then turn off the heat. Set a bowl over top of the warm water. Stir the butter and chocolate together. It will melt after a couple minutes.

stir together the brownie batter

Add the melted chocolate and butter to a large bowl, then add sugar and cocoa powder. Whisk to combine. Add in the eggs and whisk to combine.

Add in the remaining ingredients and mix JUST until combined. Pour the batter into a parchment paper lined 8×8 baking pan.

bake

Bake in preheated oven for 28-30 minutes. You will know the brownies are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Allow the brownies to fully cool in the pan.

Storage

Store covered at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Could I use milk or dark chocolate instead of the semi-sweet chocolate bar? I would recommend using the semi-sweet chocolate bar. The semi-sweet chocolate provides a balanced sweetness and bitterness that blends perfectly with the ingredients in the batter. However, if you’d like to substitute the chocolate chips for milk or dark chocolate, go for it!
  2. How do I get the brownies out of the pan, without them getting stuck or tearing on the bottom? I highly recommend lining your pan with parchment paper. This not only helps make clean-up easier, but it also makes it very easy to get the brownies out of the pan. You can simply lift the parchment paper up and out of the pan.
  3. How do I know when the brownies are done? The brownies will still have a FEW moist crumbs stuck to the toothpick when you remove it. You don’t want to overbake brownies, as you do want them to be more on the fudgy side.
  4. Can I add nuts to the brownie batter? Absolutely! You can add walnuts, pecans, or whatever nut you desire.

Description

These Homemade Brownies are perfectly fudgy, have crisp edges and that delicious shiny, crackly top. These brownies can be mixed in one bowl in a few minutes and take only 30 minutes to bake.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 stick unsalted butter (1/2 cup), cut into small pieces
  • 4 ounce semi-sweet chocolate bar, coarsely chopped and divided
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (55 grams)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar (310 grams)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour (85 grams)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (3 grams)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8×8 pan with parchment paper.

2. Mix the batter. In a bowl add the butter and 2 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until butter and chocolate are melted. Alternatively, you can bring a small pot of water to a boil, then turn off the heat. Set a bowl with the butter and chocolate on top of the pot and stir until the mixture is melted.

3. Add the melted butter and chocolate to a large mixing bowl. Add sugar and cocoa powder and whisk to combine. Add in the eggs and whisk to combine. Add the flour, salt, remaining 2 ounces chocolate and ½ cup chocolate chips. Use a rubber spatula or wooden spoon to fold the ingredients together until combined. The batter will be thick.

4. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan.

5. Bake in preheated oven for 28-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center has only a few moist crumbs on it.

6. Storage. Store the brownies, covered in an airtight container or zip-top bag for up to 1 week at room temperature. You can also store in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator the night before.

Notes

Line your pan with parchment paper. It makes clean up a breeze and makes it easy to get the brownies easy to remove from the pan after baking.

Add nuts to the brownie batter, if desired. Walnuts or pecans work great in brownie batter.

Don’t overbake the brownies. They will be done when a toothpick inserted into the center pulls out just a few moist crumbs.
