Delicious Homemade Crackers

These Homemade Crackers are simple to make and can be made in under 30 minutes. With so much flavor, everyone will be begging you to make these again and again. A whole batch of these crackers can be made for under a couple dollars. You can’t beat that price at the store and the flavor is unmatched. Make these for your holiday appetizers, or as a tasty snack.

I am a snack type of person come mid-afternoon, and usually I crave some sort of salty, savory snack, like crackers. The first time I ever made crackers was actually when I worked as a food scientist. The company I worked for mostly made chocolate, but I was in a group that focused on snacks.

There’s so much that is involved in making products that are sold in grocery stores for consumers all over. Did you ever think about the durability of crackers? We had to test the durability of the crackers to make sure that they were sturdy enough to be shipped and not break, while still having the crisp, yet tender cracker texture. I remember spending many days sitting at a machine that slowly broke the crackers in half. The machine would then analyze the cracker strength and amount of time it took to break the cracker. It was tedious, but it gave us he results we needed.

Anyways, these homemade crackers may just be my favorite crackers. They are actually very easy to make, and I truly mean it! They don’t require any yeast, just simple ingredients that you probably have sitting in your pantry right now. The homemade crackers are also fully customizable. You can add your favorite herbs and spices to change the flavor of these altogether. For these crackers I decided to add one of my favorite combos – rosemary and sea salt.

I debated about making these homemade crackers originally with some cheese in them, like parmesan. But decided to leave them with just the rosemary and sea salt and oh my goodness, they are seriously delicious! The crackers are light and crispy and get a delicious light toasty flavor from baking. The rosemary speckled throughout the crackers and sprinkle of sea salt on top just makes these sooo good. Perhaps a cheesy cracker will be another cracker flavor I can create later. The dough of the cracker is made with pantry staple ingredients. To make this whole batch of crackers, it probably costs around $1. You can’t beat that price at the grocery store and the flavor is just unmatched.

The flavor of these homemade crackers is fully customizable. I chose to add rosemary and sea salt, but you could add freshly cracked pepper, green onions, Italian seasonings, or your own favorite seasoning blend. Get creative!

The ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – All-purpose flour is needed to give the homemade crackers their shape and texture. If you want, you can use half all-purpose flour and half whole wheat flour.
  • salt – this contributes to the savory flavor of the crackers.
  • dried rosemary – I didn’t have fresh rosemary on hand, so I went with dried rosemary. The store happened to be out of almost everything (it is right around the holidays, and everyone is cooking, so…). You can certainly use fresh rosemary if desired. Just note that the dried rosemary is more concentrated, so I would recommend using double the amount of fresh rosemary. Also feel free to customize and use different fresh or dried herbs if desired.
  • garlic powder – The garlic powder adds a hint of extra flavor to these homemade crackers and truly makes them delicious.
  • onion powder – I love the addition of the onion powder in these. The recipe for these homemade crackers doesn’t use much onion powder, but it is just enough to give it a bit extra delicious flavor.
  • olive oil – the olive oil contributes to both the flavor and the crispy texture of these homemade crackers.
  • water – water is needed to activate the gluten and help form the structure of the dough for the crackers.

Here’s how to make these homemade crackers

preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 400F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

mix the dough

Add the dry ingredients to a large bowl (flour, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, dried rosemary). Stir to combine.

Add in the olive oil and water. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to stir the dough until a shaggy dough is formed. Use your hands to finish mixing the dough until it comes together in a ball. Knead the dough a few times just to form the dough into a smooth ball.

divide and roll

Divide the dough into two pieces. Working with one piece at a time, roll the dough out onto your prepared piece of parchment paper until it is 1/12th inch thick.

Cut the dough, using a pizza cutter into 2 inch x 2 inch squares. Don’t move the pieces. Just leave them as they are. They won’t bake together, as long as you made sure you cut through the dough entirely when cutting into squares.

Repeat with the remaining ball of dough on second piece of parchment paper.

Sprinkle the crackers with sea salt. Bake the crackers in the preheated oven for 14-16 minutes, or until lightly golden in color.

  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon dried rosemary, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, add flour, salt, rosemary, garlic and onion powder. Stir to combine. Add in the olive oil and water. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to stir until a shaggy dough forms. Use your hands to finish mixing. Knead the dough a few times with your hands until a smooth ball forms.

3. Divide the dough into two pieces.

4. Working with one piece at a time, roll out onto piece of prepared parchment paper into a rectangle, until the dough is 1/12th inch thick. Cut, using a pizza cutter, into 2 inch x 2 inch squares. Do not move the dough. Just leave it as it is. It will not bake together as long as you cut through the dough the whole way with the pizza cutter.

5. Repeat with second piece of dough.

6. Sprinkle sea salt on top of crackers.

7. Bake in preheated oven 14-16 minutes, or until crackers are lightly golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool on baking sheet. Store the crackers in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
