Orange chicken is a popular takeout menu item. While I love ordering takeout as a treat, I don’t enjoy eating out all the time. This orange chicken and broccoli features all the flavors, with more wholesome ingredients.
Orange chicken is traditionally deep fried, then tossed in a sugary orange sauce. The chicken in this Orange chicken recipe is pan fried, so there is not as much oil that cooks into the chicken. The orange chicken sauce in this recipe is made from orange juice, soy sauce, fresh ginger and a splash of honey. It’s the perfect combo of sweet and savory. I’m positive you will like this orange chicken, so let’s get cooking!
Here’s what you need to know…
The chicken is coated in a blend of spices. It is important to toss the chicken with the spices first to make sure the spices coat the chicken. Then, add the cornstarch and toss the chicken in the cornstarch. The cornstarch helps to create the chicken’s crispy exterior.
Make sure you whisk the orange sauce together before adding the sauce to the pan. Otherwise, the cornstarch will remain in clumps and won’t fully mix into the sauce. Heat the sauce until it has thickened then remove from the heat so it doesn’t continue to get thicker.
I steamed the broccoli in this recipe, but if you have another preferred way to cook the broccoli, feel free to do so. You don’t need a fancy steaming pot to steam broccoli. You can steam broccoli in a pan filled with water, and covered with a lid. Broccoli takes roughly 8-10 minutes to steam. The broccoli is done when you are able to easily pierce the broccoli with a fork.
