These Bacon Crackers are the appetizer everyone can’t get enough of! Buttery crackers are paired with salty, crisp bacon. The bacon is topped with brown sugar and a pinch of red pepper flakes. These crackers bake at a low temperature for 40 minutes, which allows for the brown sugar to melt and caramelize into the bacon, and for the bacon flavors to melt into the cracker. The Components
the crackers
Buttery crackers work best for this appetizer. I love making my own crackers, using either my buttery sourdough crackers, or my rosemary sea salt crackers recipe. They are both delicious, and I love the incorporation of the herbs in the crackers. It adds to the flavor of these. Certainly, though, you can just use store-bought. I would recommend using a buttery cracker like Ritz, Keebler Club, or something similar.
the toppings
Bacon, brown sugar and a pinch of red pepper flakes are the toppings needed for these delicious Bacon Crackers. Certainly, if you don’t want any heat, you could skip the red pepper flakes. However, I’d recommend at least trying it. I personally loved the sweet and spicy combo.
Ingredients
These four ingredients are the only ingredients needed to make these tasty Bacon Crackers.
- Buttery crackers
- Bacon
- Brown sugar
- Red pepper flakes
Here’s How to Make These Bacon Crackers
These crackers can be put together in under 10 minutes, maybe even 5 if you are really efficient. After lining a baking sheet with parchment paper, you will arrange the crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
Cut the bacon into fourths, then place a single piece of bacon on each cracker. If the bacon overhangs off of the cracker slightly, don’t worry. The bacon does shrink while it bakes.
Sprinkle brown sugar and a pinch of red pepper flakes on top of the bacon. That’s it! Now they are ready to bake.
These crackers do take 40 minutes to bake. They are baked in a lower oven temperature, at 250F, which allows for the brown sugar to caramelize and really soak into the bacon. The bacon also soaks into the cracker, giving the most delicious flavors all around. The long bake time and lower temperature is key to the flavor development in these.
Storage
Leftover crackers can be stored in an airtight container for 2 days at room temperature. I do not recommend placing these in the refrigerator as it will make the crackers soften and lose their delicious crisp texture.
Serving
You can serve these crackers cool, at room temperature or warm.
FAQ
- Can these be made ahead? Yes! You can make these crackers ahead of time and serve them cool, at room temperature, or warm. If you would like to serve them warm, you can reheat them in a 200F oven for 5-7 minutes.
- Can I use maple syrup or honey instead of brown sugar? If you prefer maple syrup or honey over brown sugar, you can certainly use maple syrup or honey. The maple syrup and honey will provide that sweet flavor that you want and will blend well with the spicy red pepper flakes. I personally love the brown sugar because it caramelizes over top of the bacon, giving richer depth of flavor to the crackers.
- Can I use any type of cracker? While I recommend buttery crackers, like Ritz or Keebler Club, you can certainly use any cracker you like!
- Can I add other toppings? You can add grated cheese, such as parmesan or cheddar, garlic or onion powder, and even fresh herbs, like parsley, thyme or rosemary.
