Apple Puff Pastry Buns

Apple Puff Pastry Buns – Flaky, buttery puff pastry dough is wrapped around an apple that is sprinkled in cinnamon sugar. The buns are baked until golden and crisp and the apple is tender on the inside. Dessert doesn’t get much easier than this.

Simple desserts are a necessity in my household. While I enjoy pulling out the creative side of my brain from time to time, life simply doesn’t always allow me to spend days making an intricate cake or dessert. Honestly, now that I’m a wife and mother of three boys my desires to spend an entire day or days making cakes aren’t exactly my top priority. Side note, before I had kids I ran a small wedding cake business and making wedding cakes literally takes days. I enjoyed it, but at the same time it was very stressful.

I digress, this apple dessert truly doesn’t get much simpler. The recipe features fresh apple that is sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, then tucked inside flaky puff pastry dough. It takes minutes to prep the dessert, and roughly 20 minutes to bake. Let’s get baking!

Here’s what you need to know…

This apple dessert only has a few steps and is truly simple to make. Peel and core your apple, then slice into slices crosswise. If you don’t have an apple corer (is that a word?), you can just cut straight through the core. Use a circle cookie cutter, or a knife to cut a hole in the center that’s roughly 1 1/2 inches wide. If you cored the apple, you may have to make the center hole slightly bigger. Use a knife or cookie cutter to expand the hole.

Brush the apple slices with a small amount of butter. This part mostly is to help the cinnamon sugar mixture stick to the apple slice. Sprinkle the apple slices with cinnamon sugar, then wrap the puff pastry around the apple slices. The puff pastry slices should be roughly 1/4 inch thick. This part was a little tedious, in that it took a little bit of time to wrap the puff pastry around the apple slice. Weave the puff pastry strips through the center hole of the apple slice, then around the ring, repeating until the entire apple ring is covered.

Once this step is done, you’ll brush the apple puff pastry buns with a beaten egg (this helps achieve the golden brown, shiny crust), then bake for about 20 minutes.

Description

Flaky, buttery puff pastry dough is wrapped around an apple that is sprinkled in cinnamon sugar. The buns are baked until golden and crisp and the apple is tender on the inside. Dessert doesn’t get much easier than this.

Ingredients

Scale

2 large apples, peeled and cored

1 box frozen puff pastry

23 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together sugar and cinnamon.

2. Peel and core the apples. Cut apple into slices, crosswise (lay apple on side and cut into slices, so that the shape of the slice is a ring). Make sure the center hole is roughly 1 ½ inches – use a knife or a small circle cookie cutter to increase the width of the center.

3. Brush the apple slice with melted butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

4. Cut the puff pastry into ¼ inch thick strips. Wrap the puff pastry around the apple slices, weaving the puff pastry through the center of the apple slice and around the apple ring. Overlap the strips as you wrap the apple with the puff pastry.

5. Place on prepared baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake in preheated oven 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
